Humboldt Farm Mutual Insurance Company of South Dakota’s goal is to provide quality insurance products and services in a profitable manner throughout rural eastern South Dakota. We will maintain knowledgeable staff and respond to the changing market conditions.
Company History
In November 1889 a group of farmers met to organize an insurance company to help stand the member/patron losses from fire and lightning. This company was know as Farmers Mutual Fire & Lightning Company of Humboldt, SD. On November 20, 1889 they met in the School House District #76 and elected their first officers. By January 1891 the company had 113 members with $180,000 insurance in force. The minutes were recorded in German until 1907.
In 1920 the company merged with Farmers Mutual and was now called Humboldt Farmers Mutual Insurance Company.
On September 13, 1984 it was the decision of the board to become a state farm mutual insurance company in order to be able to write wind, theft and liability insurance. Now the company would be know as Humboldt Farm Mutual Insurance Company of South Dakota.
In 1990, the 100th year of the company, it was announced at its annual meeting that the company would begin writing homeowners, mobile homes and renters insurance with automobile insurance written with Capital Insurance Group located in Salem, SD.
In 1991, the company began writing farmowners policies to be competitive in the insurance market.
As of January 1, 2010 the company has $130,253,917 insurance in force.
Presently the company is now reinsured with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, Grinnell, IA. The automobile insurance is also packaged with Grinnell and they allow our agents to stay competitive in today’s insurance market.
Humboldt Farm Mutual Insurance Company of South Dakota is a member of the SDAMIC our state insurance association and NAMIC our national insurance association.
